Growing up in Maryland where one of the most popular foods is blue crab, the business partners (known by many as the Middletown Twins) started a business delivering steamed shellfish. After growing up as one of six children in a rough district of Toronto, Angela Samuels found work as a plus-size fashion model and achieved success, working with some of the biggest names in retail, like Sears and Wal-Mart. With more than $10 billion in annual revenue and over 5,000 employees, WWT is one of the largest private companies in the U.S. America’s 3.12 million Black-owned businesses generate $206 billion in annual revenue and support 3.56 million U.S. Many black-owned businesses have their own e-commerce websites where you can purchase their products or services directly. We believe that more pro bono services from accountants, attorneys, marketing agencies, and other professionals would help facilitate the growth of Black designers over the next five years.


Black Enterprise’s ranking was compiled before the opening of Tyler Perry Studios, for which the movie mogul bought land in 2015 for $20 million. Successful Black businesses can be a way to close the racial wealth gap and achieve economic justice. Video is the fastest way to grab the attention of your audience. I would like to see way more Black graphic designers at the forefront. And, as the only Black man permitted to address the 1895 Atlanta Cotton States and International Exposition at Piedmont Park, Washington repeatedly urged freed Black people to “cast down your bucket where you are,” rather than migrate north with hopes of escaping the discrimination that dampened their entrepreneurial dreams. After escaping slavery in 1861, Charles Richard Patterson would go on to organize one of the most successful carriage building firms in 1893. The firm assembled 28 types of horse-drawn carriages and employed roughly 10-15 people of color. Founded by one of the most influential Black businessmen in 1898, Charles Clinton Spaulding, North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company became the largest Black-owned business in the nation. Today, the company is located in Durham, North Carolina and remains the largest Black-owned insurance company in the U.S. By the mid-1950s, it had thirty-two branches across the U.S. Small business owners of color have demonstrated remarkable tenacity in the face of economy uncertainty.


Many apps and online directories, successful black owned businesses successful black owned businesses such as The Nile List or Official Black Wallstreet, have emerged offering a database of African-American-owned businesses that consumers can support.
