Sad Anime That Makes Japanese Teens Cry, Prepare Your Tissue!

Anime is not only made to make us happy. The proof, there are many anime that actually make you shudder or stress . Not only that, there is also a sad anime that is known for successfully making the audience shed tears, be it because they are moved, or because the storyline makes their hearts hurt, so that even adults can cry because of it.

However, not all anime is suitable for all ages. Well, to find out what sad anime makes Japanese teenagers shed tears, the smartphone keyboard application Simeji also conducted a survey on Japanese teenagers aged 10-19 years. The survey took place from May 28 to June 9 and received 999 responses.

Here are the top 10 anime that make you cry according to Japanese teenagers!

10. Your Lie in April

9. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

8. Violet Evergarden

7. Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World

6. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

5. Crayon Shin-chan

When compared to other series on the list, Crayon Shin-chan is probably the most surprising. How not, this series tells the story of the daily life of a 5-year-old naughty boy with his friends and family that almost all of the episodes contain humor and comedy. But, it seems that there are some touching moments and make the teenagers cry even though I don't know what the answer is, or do they laugh until they cry?

The Crayon Shin-chan anime itself has been airing since 1992 and has more than 1,000 episodes, making Shin-Chan one of Japan's most popular anime.

4. My Hero Academia

The anime adaptation of My Hero Academia has managed to rule the world since it premiered in 2016. With a solid shonen series-style action story combined with themes of friendship, perseverance, and the struggle to become a hero, My Hero Academia offers inspirational moments from the character of the protagonist, Izuku “Deku” Midoriya, who never gives up. Enough to bring tears to your eyes! อ่านการ์ตูน

3. Your Name

Although lately the anime world has been dominated by Kimetsu no Yaiba, of course we can't forget the phenomenal film Your Name, right? This film by Makoto Shinkai once ruled the anime world in 2016 to the point that a Hollywood remake will be made !

Respondents decorated the survey comments with words such as “the story, visuals, and music are so beautiful” and “I cried seeing Mitsuha and Taki miss each other.” Maybe, the combination of beautiful visuals and a story that focuses on human relationships is perfect for making someone cry, right?

2. A Silent Voice

The next sad anime is A Silent Voice. Although fiction, this anime feels "real" with a realistic theme. Silent Voice has a deaf protagonist and has topics that are rife in Japan: bullying and suicide .

“I want to treat people better after watching it,” said one respondent.

Meanwhile, other respondents said that they were inspired to learn sign language after watching this anime film.

1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Apparently, the phenomenal series Kimetsu no Yaiba is not only named the highest-selling film in Japan , but also the sad anime that has the most potential to make Japanese teenagers cry. Since the anime was released in 2019, viewers around the world have seen Tanjiro do whatever it takes to protect his little sister who turned into a demon, Nezuko. The respondents were touched by the strong ties of brotherhood in Kimetsu no Yaiba! And if you think about it, there are actually quite a few moments that JS finds touching or sad in the manga version. We'll just have to wait until the new season airs, whether it can still hold the first position as a sad anime for Japanese teenagers in 2022.
