Simple Steps to Maintain Mental Health

Maintaining mental or mental health is as important as maintaining physical health. But many people, even the government, have not paid serious attention to mental health issues.

The burden of mental illness in the country is quite large. About 1 million patients with severe mental disorders and 19 million patients with mild mental disorders were recorded in the 2014 Riskesdas. The increasing number of patients with mental disorders in Indonesia, and almost all over the world, is due to the rapid growth of human life, as well as the burden of life. In metropolitan cities, people are generally vulnerable to mental illness, such as depression, alcoholism, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Actually, there are some simple steps that we can practice to detect and help maintain our mental health .

Get to know yourself

Everyone is unique, so recognizing your own habits when you feel healthy can help you detect mental disorders within yourself more quickly. We can note how long we usually need to sleep, no matter whether we are morning people or stay up late; how much energy we need for each activity, or how often we feel hungry. Dramatic changes in these habits can indicate emotional or mental stress. This can also be done by parents on their children's habits to detect mental disorders in children.

Taking time for yourself

Now is the time when the world seems to be spinning faster, demands from family, environment, and work are more, more information is circulating from various media, especially from the internet. Therefore, people are also more susceptible to stress. Take some time each day just to relax and do whatever we love. It could be just a warm bath, getting body treatments at the salon, getting a massage, or doing a hobby. Never feel selfish when doing this, especially when our energy is needed by our family or office. We will become less useful anyway if we are stressed or tired.

Free from all kinds of screens

As much as possible, keep all kinds of technology, such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, or TVs away from the bedroom or avoid activating these devices for two hours every day. Those of you who are addicted to social media may be tempted to check the latest news on your timeline, but believe me, being constantly connected to such technology will only affect the quality of your sleep. Good quality sleep is very important for mental health. Besides that, you also have to live a healthy lifestyle

Write

When stressed, we find it difficult to focus. Sometimes a lot of ideas milling about in my head, but very difficult to reach or describe. Try translating those ideas or thoughts into writing. It can be in the form of a to-do list, or in the form of a journal. This writing activity can be very cathartic.

exercise

Our mind and body are closely related. Physical health affects mental health. Vice versa. Exercising has been shown to help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, in addition to helping maintain physical health. Exercising outdoors is highly recommended because that way, you can also get the ideal fresh air. Exercising at least 30 minutes per day is sufficient.

Reduce alcoholic drinks

Many people self-medicate from mental disorders by drinking alcoholic beverages or taking sedatives, even though the effects are only temporary and the long-term consequences can be more severe. Alcohol is classified as a depressant or contains substances that can suppress the nerve center, which can actually cause mental illness.
